The X-ray crystal structure of Sc<sub>2<\/sub>C<sub>2<\/sub>@<em>C<sub>s<\/sub><\/em>(hept)-C<sub>88<\/sub> reveals that a zigzag Sc<sub>2<\/sub>C<sub>2<\/sub> unit was encapsulated in an unprecedented <em>C<sub>s<\/sub><\/em>(hept)-C<sub>88<\/sub> cage. Calculations suggest that this endohedral fullerene could be a kinetically trapped species derived from the recently reported Sc<sub>2<\/sub>C<sub>2<\/sub>@<em>C<\/em><sub>2<em>v<\/em><\/sub>(9)-C<sub>86<\/sub> via a direct C<sub>2<\/sub> insertion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2666 Functionalized Fullerenes in Self-Assembled Monolayers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/Image\/Get?imageInfo.ImageType=GA&amp;imageInfo.ImageIdentifier.ManuscriptID=C8NR00511G\" alt=\"Graphical abstract: Magnetic hysteresis in self-assembled monolayers of Dy-fullerene single molecule magnets on gold\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Fullerene single molecule magnets (SMMs) DySc<small><sub>2<\/sub><\/small>N@C<small><sub>80<\/sub><\/small>\u00a0and Dy<small><sub>2<\/sub><\/small>ScN@C<small><sub>80<\/sub><\/small>\u00a0are functionalized\u00a0<em>via<\/em>\u00a0a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with surface-anchoring thioether groups. The SMM properties of Dy-fullerenes are substantially affected by the cycloaddition.
