The academic research of KMU was begun from topics such as tropical medicine, Chinese herbalism, and snake venom. Since the
\nestablishment of the university, we have undertaken an enormous responsibility to offer medical services and augmentation of public
\nhygiene to the people in southern Taiwan. As a center of medical institutes in southern Taiwan, KMU has solid and experienced
\nresearch groups. Besides 21 departments, there are four independent graduate institutions and five degree courses.
\nAs for research, in addition to doing personal research, KMU encourages researchers from different fields to do interdisciplinary
\nstudies together. The research center was set up by the Office of Research and Development in 2014, including the main Research
\nCenters for Environmental Medicine, Center for Infections Disease and Cancer Research , Research Center for Natural Products and
\nDrug Development , Othopaedic Research Center , Center for Lipid and Glyecomedicine Research , Center for Stem Cell Research,
\nResearch Center for Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization , along with Center for Biomarkers and Biotech Drugs . KMU encourages
\nfuture studies and keeps on improving research quality.<\/p>\n

KMU regulates various research project grants and rewards, for
\nexample, the \u201cTeachers\u2019 thematic research project subsidy,\u201d
\n\u201cNewly recruited teacher\u2019s development program subsidy,\u201d
\n\u201cTeachers studying abroad and returning to serve thematic project
\nsubsidy,\u201d \u201cPretrial system of new researchers,\u201d \u201cThematic research
\nproject reward,\u201d \u201cTeacher research paper reward,\u201d and \u201cTeacher\u2019s
\nparticipation in international conferences\u201d. KMU has invested
\nmore than NTD 50 million in sum total as research grants and
\nreward expenses.
\nBesides, in order to promote academic research, KMU has
\nacademic exchanges with Academia Sinica, National Health
\nResearch Institutes, National Sun Yat-sen University, Harvard
\nUniversity, the National Cancer Institute, University of North
\nCarolina, Fukuoka Prefectural Institute of Environmental Health
\nCare, Chi Mei Medical Center, and Changhua Christian Hospital.
\nWith the efforts of its colleagues, KMU obtained 251 grants from
\nthe Ministry of Science Technology in 2013. The total grants came
\nto more than NT 290 million. In addition, there were 102 grants
\nsubsidized by other institutes (the Ministry of Health and Welfare,
\nthe Ministry of Economic Affairs, National Health Research
\nInstitutes, and the Ministry of Education, etc.) and these grants
\namounted to about NT 110 million. The other grants were provided
\nby KMU itself; 66 research project grants that amounted to NT 33
\nmillion. There were 1100 papers published in refereed journals.
\nKMU has collaborated with National Sun Yat-sen University,
\nNational Pingtung University of Science and Technology,
\nAcademia Sinica, National Health Research Institutes, National
\nApplied Research Laboratories, Changhua Christian Hospital,
\nChi Mei Medical Center, and Puli Christian Hospital. From 2008 to
\n2013, cooperating with National Sun Yat-Sen University in a form
\nof a research group, the Multicampus Research Group invited the\u00a0scholars of the two universities to participate in various research
\nfields. This year 46 research projects were proposed through a
\nmode of collaboration of the principle investigators of KMU and
\nNational Sun Yat-sen University.
\nThe fields of research include natural products, biotechnology,
\nneuroscience, cancer mechanisms, environmental medicine and
\nothers. KMU offers NT 8 million as research funds to KMU\u2019s
\nscholars in the projects. Through academic collaboration of the
\ntwo universities, more than 100 papers have been published. The
\nforeign academic cooperation includes Waseda University, Harvard
\nUniversity, the University of North Carolina, the Environmental
\nHealth and Toxicology Sciences Laboratory, and the National
\nCenter for Toxicological Research, etc.
\nWaseda University has currently signed a collaboration agreement
\nwith KMU to work on research that is more specific. The two
\nsides agreed to set up labs and promote mutual exchanges and
\ncooperation between researchers. Initially the two sides will
\ndecide on two priority themes of mutual interest for promotion
\nand investment: “Nanotechnology and Health”; and “Exercise
\nScience and Health Promotion.”
\nKMU and the University of Arkansas have signed an agreement
\nas sister schools for 30 years. The two universities focus on the
\ntraining of professionals and exchange plans. The two schools
\nhave adopted a double-degree and presently engage in dealing
\nwith nanotechnology, multiple myeloma and other cancers. By
\nfocusing on nanomedicine research with the US National Center
\nfor Toxicological Research Institute, the three parties have formed
\na triangular coalition.
\nKMU passed all the Department (Institute) evaluations in 2008 and
\nUniversity affairs evaluations in 2011. KMU is the only medical
\nuniversity in Taiwan to completely pass all such evaluations.
\nKMU accepted \u201cDepartment (Institute) Evaluation\u201d by three
\nechelons from December 8~16, 2008. All departments and
\ninstitutes (27 departments\/institutes and 44 classes) of KMU have
\npassed these evaluations. KMU is the only medical university to
\nwin such an honor. Originally, KMU was scheduled to accept the
\nsecond periodical department (institute) evaluation and general
\neducation executed by the Foundation for Higher Education
\nEvaluation and Accreditation, which was ratified by the Ministry
\nof Education. Because the Ministry of Education has promoted
\nthe university self-evaluation since 2012, KMU won the Excellent
\nTeaching Project Award and the development of world-class
\nuniversities and leading research centers plan grants; therefore KMU
\nwas listed as a priority pilot project to apply for self-evaluation.
\nKMU has conducted university affairs evaluations since 2011 and
\npassed all five evaluations, including \u201cthe university self-position,\u201d
\n\u201cuniversity affairs management and operating,\u201d \u201cteaching and
\nlearning resources,\u201d \u201cachievements and social responsibilities,\u201d
\nand \u201ccontinuing improving and quality guaranteeing mechanism.\u201d
\nPassing all university affairs evaluations and department\/institute
\nevaluations in 2008 contributed to KMU\u2019s becoming a \u201cuniversity
\nof excellent achievements\u201d, which is defined by the ninth article
\nof the \u201cuniversity evaluation approach.\u201d Feng Chia University
\nand KMU are the only two universities to meet this standard. This
