International Academic
\nCollaboration
\nReinforcing the Network of International Relations<\/p>\n

KMU establishes collaborative relations with overseas universities
\nactively. Within the recent three years, the increase of new
\ncollaborative cases with sister schools is as follows: 6 cases in
\n2012, 4 cases in 2013, and 23 cases in 2014. The year of 2014 can
\nbe said to be the most brilliant year of having cooperative relations
\noutside the university. In addition to the exchanges with the sister
\nschools, KMU has also joined international activities assiduously,
\nincluding Educators\u2019 annual conferences, the Taiwan-Florida and
\nTaiwan-Maryland Conferences on Higher Education, and QS
\nInternational Events for Professional Leaders in Education.
\nParticipating in APCS (Asia Pacific Cities Summit) in 2013 also
\nstrengthened KMU\u2019s international network and raised KMU\u2019s
\ninternational awareness. Moreover, KMU hosted \u201cTaiwan-
\nMaryland Conference on Higher Education\u201d in 2014, which invited
\nscholars from universities in both Taiwan and the State of Maryland
\nto communicate and brainstorm on mutual academic collaboration.<\/p>\n

International collaborative teaching courses<\/p>\n

According to individual needs, teachers can plan courses by
\nthemselves and invite international scholars to give the course
\ntogether. By doing so, students will have a cross-cultural vision
\nand acquire professional content. The number of foreign scholars
\nwho have come to KMU to give courses reached twenty-one in
\n2012, sixty-one in 2013 and forty-five in 2014.<\/p>\n

Dual Ph.D. Degree Program<\/p>\n

In order to raise KMU\u2019s awareness and acquire more international
\nresources and cooperating opportunities, KMU signed agreements
\nwith the University of Szeged in Hungary and the Uppsala
\nUniversity in Sweden between 2011- 2012 on the cooperation of
\nthe Dual Ph.D. Degree Program. One doctoral student has
\ngraduated from the Natural Products Institute from the University
\nof Szeged in Hungary in 2014. KMU also signed an agreement on
\nthe Dual Ph.D. Degree with UC Irvine in the U.S and Aix-Marseille
\nUniversity in France between 2013-2015 to encourage teachers
\nand students to have more international communications.<\/p>\n

Collaborative teaching courses given by the scholars from
\nHarvard University and University of Arkansas for Medical
\nSciences (UAMS)<\/p>\n

Since 2009, KMU has successfully invited scholars from Harvard
\nUniversity to give collaborative teaching courses. Besides, KMU
\nhas maintained a good relationship with our first sister school, the
\nUniversity of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), since 1980.
\nTo strengthen the exchange with UAMS, KMU has cooperated
\nwith UAMS to provide a course project called \u201cUAMS Biochem
\nWeek\u201d for medical students since 2012. Furthermore, the \u201cLiver
\nWeek\u201d has been formed with Harvard scholars since 2014, too.<\/p>\n

Cultivating Teachers\u2019 and
\nStudents\u2019 Global Mobility<\/p>\n

Students\u2019 study abroad exchange and participation in
\ninternational conferences<\/p>\n

1.The subsidy for studying abroad
\nKMU enacts \u201cGuidelines for the grants of students\u2019 studying
\nabroad service\u201d and encourages students to take courses abroad,
\nlearn on the job, join volunteer activities, participate in industry
\ninternship, or publish papers. The number of people who applied
\nfor the subsidy these three years: 334 persons in 2012, 408 persons
\nin 2013 and 418 persons in 2014.
\n2.Study Abroad Project under the Ministry of Education
\nKMU sends students abroad for overseas study with the
\nMinistry of Education\u2019s subsidiary projects: Scholarships for
\nExcellent Students to Study Abroad; Hardship for Students to
\nStudy Abroad; and Pilot Overseas Internships. In 2011 and 2012,
\nthree students were selected under Scholarships for Excellent
\nStudents to Study Abroad, and 26 students under Pilot Overseas
\nInternships. Four students were selected under Scholarships for
\nExcellent Students to Study Abroad, and 36 students under Pilot
\nOverseas Internships in 2013, while 8 students under Scholarships
\nfor Excellent Students to Study Abroad, and 31 students under
\nPilot Overseas Internships were selected in 2014.<\/p>\n

Recognizing overseas course credits<\/p>\n

Students of the Department of Medicine and Post-graduate Medical
\nDepartment will be sent to Harvard University, University of Hawaii,
\nUniversity of Seoul, and Juntendo University for learning and
\ninternships. Graduate students of the College of Nursing will be
\nsent to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
\nfor taking cross-cultural nursing courses. Students of the College
\nof Health and Science still studying in the graduate program will
\nbe sent to the Medical Management Institute of Virginia University
\nfor taking the course, \u201cAmerican Medical Management Practice,\u201d
\nof which credit will be recognized by KMU.<\/p>\n

International Volunteering Service Project:<\/p>\n

KMU has selected students to provide medical services to the
\nSolomon Islands, the Kingdom of Malawi, and India since
\n2007. The Kingdom of Malawi group was awarded \u201cFirst place in
\nthe iVT volunteer group of the southern region\u201d and \u201cExcellent
\nperformance in the iVT volunteer group of the southern region\u201d
\nin 2012, and \u201cFirst place in the regional peace volunteer group of
\ninternational volunteer service\u201d in 2013. Malawi and the North
\nIndia groups cooperated with National Sun Yat-sen University to
\noffer many more services to these developing areas in 2014. In the
\nsame year, Malawi group was awarded Second place in the Taiwan\u00a0Youth volunteers group competition of international volunteer.
\nThe year 2015 opens a new page for international volunteers since
\nthe Indonesia group and the international volunteer club were found
\nat the same time so as to recruit more students who are interested
\nin international affairs and volunteer services.<\/p>\n

Enhancing Overseas Students\u2019
\nAmount<\/p>\n

Propagating KMU\u2019s learning programs, receiving overseas
\nstudents<\/p>\n

In order to increase the enrollment of overseas students, KMU
\npropagates learning programs and admission information,
\nparticipates in overseas education fairs, and contacts Taiwan\u2019s
\noverseas offices and overseas centers of education. The number
\nof overseas students is increasing each year: 42 persons in 2012
\nand 55 persons in 2013. In addition, the \u201cBachelor program of the
\nDepartment of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology\u201d
\nhas begun to receive overseas students since 2014.<\/p>\n

Encouraging overseas students as exchange students to KMU<\/p>\n

1.\u201cTaiwan Tech Trek, TTT,\u201d National Science Council
\nKMU offers professional internship opportunities and attracts
\nmany students to apply for the program. These applicants are
\noutstanding. Fifteen persons participated in summer program in
\nKMU in 2011, and 15 persons in 2012. In 2014, there will be
\n13 students. 6 students came to participate in this program, and
\nin 2015 will be 7 students.
\n2.MHIRT (Minority Health and Health Disparities International
\nResearch Training) Project by San Diego University
\nKMU cooperates with San Diego University, where students who
\nare selected can receive related training and research in KMU
\nduring the summer vacation. Five students in 2011, two students
\ncame annually from 2012 to 2014. And in 2015, there will be
\ntwo students come to participate in this program.
\n3.In regard to the Exchange Overseas students from sister schools,
\ninternational student organizations, and students applying for
\nthe program themselves, there were 162 students in 2011, 137
\nstudents in 2012, and 114 students in 2013.<\/p>\n

Encouraging English-teaching courses<\/p>\n

Master\u2019s and Ph.D. programs have uploaded their syllabuses in
\nEnglish. The approach to awarding teachers lecturing in English
\nand encouraging them to give courses in English has been revised.
\nDuring the past three years, the number of courses lectured in
\nEnglish were 94 in 2012, 102 in 2013 and 100 in 2014.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
